Researchers-Find-Dangerous-Chemicals-in-Fast-Food-Wrappers

A study by the Silent Spring Institute, published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology Letters, has shown that fast food packaging contains fluorinated chemicals otherwise known as PFASs (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances).

According to research, these chemical can move into the food from the wraps and could cause kidney and testicular cancer, high cholesterol, decreased fertility, thyroid problems and abnormal hormonal changes and lower immune response in children.

What to do

It’s hard for consumers who wish to reduce their exposure to these chemicals to tell if a wrap contains flourinated chemicals or not but according to Laurel Schaider, a research scientist at the Silent Spring Institute and one of the authors of the paper:

“…to reduce that migration from packaging into food, for instance, take the food out of the packaging sooner rather than later.”Researchers-Find-Dangerous-Chemicals-in-Fast-Food-WrappersYou could also ask that your fries or dessert be served in a paper cup or a non-contact paper bag.

Schaider further urged consumers to put pressure on their favorite fast food chains to switch to packaging that doesn’t contain fluorinated chemicals.
